Indian state caps movie ticket prices

Movie ticket prices have been capped by a state government in India.

The Karnataka government, which presides over a population of 61 million, issued an order that restricts ticket costs at theatres to Rs 200 (£2.40/$3.10/€2.85), although that does not include taxes. The state includes major cities such as Bangalore.

While ‘Gold class’ seats are not included in the order, these premium areas cannot be more than 10 per cent of seating capacity of the movie theatre.

Further exemption has also been provided for the high-end movie theatres like IMAX and 4DX, as the government agreed that such theatres faced greater costs.

Many movie fans had become concerned about increasing prices, which led to the government promising the cap in the 2017-18 budget.

Over the last five years, several rounds of talks with multiplex owners were held by the government and repeated assurances by former information department ministers of capping the ticket prices were given.

Meanwhile, Indian movie theatre chain INOX Leisure has entered into a ticketing agreement with Orbgen Technologies for promotions, marketing and listing of its movie and events tickets inventory.

Orbgen operates online and mobile application-based ticketing platforms which provide immediate window for booking of tickets  for cinema and entertainment events under the brand name Ticketnew.

INOX is one of the fastest growing multiplex chains in the country, building and managing 118 multiplexes and 468 screens in 58 cities throughout India.
