TicketWeb and charity launch new grassroots music ticket site

Live Nation’s TicketWeb division has helped to set up a new ticketing website for the UK’s grassroots music scene.

The GrassrootsVenues.Tickets website will be run by TicketWeb and the UK Music Venue Trust, a registered charity that aims to protect, support and improve independent live music venues.

The website, which is described as “a resource for ethical ticketing”, will provide a fixed donation of 50p ($0.65/€0.55) directly to the venue every time a ticket is purchased.

A small proportion of the site’s five-per-cent service charge will go to the Music Venue Trust, with the remainder of the service fee going to Ticketweb, which receives 45p from every £10 ticket sale.

Some 16 venues have already signed up to the initiative, including Le Belle Angele in Edinburgh and The Sound Lounge in London.

According to data provided by Music Venue Trust, London lost 35 per cent of its grassroots music venues between 2007 and 2015.

Supporting the venues

“We wanted to work with a partner to develop a grassroots ticket that genuinely enables fans to know that what they are buying is directly supporting the venues they love that really need help,” said Mark Davyd, Music Venue Trust chief executive, in a statement.

“We’re delighted to be working with TicketWeb to deliver just that product, and to be able to do it at no extra cost to the customer.”

Operators and venue owners who sign up to the service can also choose to employ Music Venue Trust to look after their reporting and payments to UK collection society PRS for Music, in return for a surcharge of 30p out of every £10 spent.

Participating venues will additionally receive access to sales figures and reports via a mobile app, as well as listing on the main TicketWeb platform and Ticketmaster’s UK site.

The site comes months after the launch of TicketWeb Backline, a service that offers reduced booking fees and assistance with performing right responsibilities.
