Festival Safe initiative launched to aid event-goers

Advice on buying tickets and reporting criminal activity are among the main elements of Festival Safe, a new guide for those attending live events.

Developed by Broadwick Live group production director Jon Drape, the website is an initiative designed by organisers, industry professionals and the emergency services to provide information which can help patrons prevent incidents both big and small from occurring at festivals.

Focus areas include what to expect before you go, camping, crime, drugs and alcohol and sexual and mental health.

As part of its ‘Be Prepared’ section, the site focuses on ticketing issues including fraud and cloning.

The advice reads: “Always buy your festival ticket from an official outlet affiliated with the event. Check the payment pages are secure by looking for a padlock symbol in the address bar, and making sure the website address begins with ‘https’.

“Paying for tickets with a credit card means that generally the card issuer is jointly liable for a failure for goods or services to be provided. If you have lost money to a ticket scam, report it to Action Fraud.”

The Festival Safe website has been designed to relay its messaging in a fun and relevant manner appealing to the target audience of 18-25.

Speaking about Festival Safe, Drape said: “I’ve worked and attended hundreds of different festivals and events over the years.

“I’ve literally heard it all, from hypothermia in July to people not realising they have to bring their own tents”.

“Eventually you see patterns emerge and festival goers making the same mistakes and getting in the same jams year in year out.

“It was at this point that I realised no one had laid out a manifesto for how to have a great experience and not a festival fail. That’s ultimately what Festival Safe is – a one-stop shop for how to have the best possible time.”
