Tokyo 2020 price cap not agreed

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organising Committee has recommended a price cap on tickets for the Games, but nothing has been confirmed at present.

Without the decision to limit the prices, tickets could cost customers up to 288,000 yen ($2,600/€2,200/£1,900).

The proposed prices have been based on the 2012 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

The caps that have been debated ranged between 2,000 and 288,000 yen, though many experts on the panel disagreed with one or both prices, according to the Japan Times

“We couldn’t reach a conclusion,” Sadahiko Kano, who heads the ticketing strategy panel, told the Times. “We discussed about creating a bigger gap (in pricing).”

The Times also reported that according to sources close to the matter, the proposed ceiling for tickets is 144,100 yen, admission for Olympic events are said to be 2,000 yen, and Paralympic events would start at 1,000 yen.

It was suggested that the price range be widened to include more affordable tickets for different types of guests.

In addition, the panel of experts discussed a cheaper ticket for elementary school students, children, and families in the range of 1,000-2,020 yen, and looked at significantly raising prices for those in wealthier groups.

The committee will reportedly continue to discuss ticket prices and present their recommendation to the International Olympic Committee in July.
