Tokyo 2020 to give out tickets to kids

One million tickets will be made available to children during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the organising committee for the two events has revealed.

The Yomirui Shimbun newspaper reported that the tickets will be for students of high school age or younger. The initiative forms part of a cooperation programme between the organising committee and education facilities in Japan.

The Yomiuri Shimbun noted that London 2012 and Rio 2016 launched similar initiatives, with the organising committees of those Games offering 110,000 and 300,000 tickets to students, respectively.

The most expensive Tokyo 2020 ticket will reportedly cost fans more than the most expensive London 2012 ticket, which stood at Y290,000 (£1,990/€2,270/$2,650) for the opening ceremony. Tokyo’s cheapest tickets will cost less than Y2,900, which was the cheapest price for London 2012 tickets.

The Yomiuri Shimbun added that the Tokyo 2020 expert panel will discuss adding a Y2,020 ticketing offer to reflect the year of the Games.
