Ticketmaster warns against exposing barcodes online

Ticketmaster

Ticketmaster has issued a warning to customers over exposing ticket barcodes online following an increase in the fraudulent use of such data to access sports and entertainment events.

Ticketmaster said that the issue also applies to tickets of other forms, citing a recent case when a woman won a bet on the Melbourne Cup horse racing event and posted a picture of the winning slip online. Someone was able to use the data on the barcode to collect her winnings.

“It is unfortunate that a simple and innocent Facebook post can lead to major problems, but in the interest of protecting live event fans we need to send a strong message about online safety,” Ticketmaster said.

“To avoid the pain and hassle of turning up to a concert and being denied entry, we encourage everyone to keep their tickets in a safe and secure spot and resist the urge to post them online. At the very least, if you are taking pictures of your tickets, hide the barcode to protect yourself from online fraudsters.”
