Nice gesture as French club pays for away tickets

French Ligue 1 football club Nice has confirmed it will pay for travelling supporters’ tickets for next weekend’s game at title rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

The club is currently second in France’s top division and a single point ahead of reigning champions PSG.

French football fans often boycott away trips to PSG because of high ticket prices – around three times the average for Ligue 1 – and Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere said he wanted to make sure of vocal support at the Parc de Princes.

Rivere also said the gesture was "our way of thanking our fans for travelling all across Europe" following the club's Europa League group stage exit.

"When the barrier is not administrative, we do not want it to be financial either – we do not want ticket prices to hold our fans back," Rivere told the club’s website.

"To make this match a great party and to have our team benefit from the support they deserve, we have to have our most fervent supporters with us.

"Our support in Europe has been quite extraordinary. You have to realise what a huge effort that takes. These are long trips in buses, cars and planes.”
