Atlanta lifted by season-ticket sales before MLS debut

Atlanta United, which will join North America’s Major League Soccer next year, has already sold 22,000 season tickets ahead of its inaugural campaign.

The Georgia-based club’s president, Darren Eales, confirmed that the franchise has already converted all but 9,000 of the 31,000 season ticket deposits.

The figures mean that Atlanta will have the second highest number of season-ticket-holders in MLS behind Seattle Sounders – a record for an MLS expansion franchise. The sales are all the more remarkable considering the franchise does not have a head coach yet, only has seven players on the roster and only has 11 salespeople working on distributing the tickets.

More season tickets will be released for the general public in the near future, Eales added.

The franchise will play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Atlanta Falcons NFL American football franchise. Arthur Blank owns both franchises.

For games that do not require the upper bowl of seating, a huge curtain will be used to limit the capacity to 29,000. However, Eales has said that the franchise is exploring opening the upper deck for a few matches, considering the demand.

Eales added that the club has sold out eight of 10 club seat sections, with 3,000 tickets having been snapped up in the designated home supporters’ ‘Kop’ section.
