Bette Midler musical smashes Broadway records

It has been revealed that more than $9m (£7m/€8m) was spent in the first 24 hours on tickets for the ‘Hello, Dolly!’ musical, which will be staged in New York next year.

The total value of the tickets sold on the first day was an all-time record for Broadway.

Tickets ranged in price from $79 to $189.

The show will take place at the Shubert theatre from April 2017 and will feature legendary actress Bette Midler.

“The combination of this show and Bette Midler has proven irresistible to theatre-goers,” the Shubert Organisation’s chairman and president, Philip J Smith and Robert E Wankel, said in a joint statement.

Hello, Dolly! First opened on Broadway in 1964, with Carol Channing in the lead role. At the time it was the longest-running production in the history of Broadway musicals.

A movie version of the show was released in 1969 and won three Oscars.

The show has been revived on stages worldwide over the past half century, including three times in London’s West End.

The 2017 edition of the show will be produced by Broadway great Scott Rudin.
