Comedians dominate Ents24 annual survey

Comedians led the way in Ents24’s list of most popular acts during 2016.

Micky Flanagan took the Most Popular Artist and Best Seller titles for the year to December 1. Flanagan finished just ahead of Peter Kay in the Most Popular Artist list, which considered which act gained the most new Ents24 trackers during the period, while Michael McIntyre was fourth.

Tickets to see the CBeebies children’s show were third on the list, with rock group Coldplay in fifth place and the most popular music act. Adele, Ed Sheeran and Arctic Monkeys all made the top 10.

Flanagan edged out Good Mourning Mrs Brown, Marvel Universe Live, Greg Davies and The Specials in terms of sales via Ents24 until November 21.

The results were published in the first ever Ents24 Annual, which reviews the year in live entertainment. The study includes Ents24’s studies of the UK’s hottest postcodes for live music and comedy, a rundown of the UK’s most popular grassroots venues and interviews with some of the country’s most inspiring live music hotspots.

Ents24 spokesperson Adam Brooks said the company’s reach across sectors within the live events sphere meant its data for 2016 was particularly important for the entertainment and ticketing industry.

“We're in a unique position as we're not restricted in what shows we can list or which ticket agent our visitors use; the result being the UK's most comprehensive live guide, and a more complete snapshot of live music and comedy across the UK,” says Ents24's Adam Brooks.

“With The Annual, we aimed to put that insight to practical use, to give a hint at how we can make data work for our partners, and to answer some of the live music industry's unanswered questions, as well as count down the biggest and best of the year.”

The survey comes after StubHub this week revealed that US sports were its biggest draw on both sides of the Atlantic during 2016.
