Cubs’ World Series flop hits resale prices

The Cleveland Indians' lead over the Chicago Cubs has led to a dramatic fall in secondary ticket prices for this season's Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series.

While tickets for Game 3 were changing hands for almost $10,000 before the series began earlier this month, seats for Tuesday's Game 6 were available on Monday for as little as $575.

The Indians, who lead 3-2 in the seven-game fixture, can secure the title at their Progressive Field home stadium tomorrow, however the possibility of the Cubs winning their first World Series in more than a century was the driving force behind the record ticket prices a few weeks ago.

“I think it is very possible that we would see higher prices for Game 6 if the Cubs were up 3-2 instead of the Indians,” SeatGeek spokesperson Chris Leyden told the USA Today newspaper. “Even though the Indians are at home, there was so much demand from Chicago for these games earlier in the series, but with no chance for the Cubs to clinch in Game 6 that demand has dropped a bit.”

Games 3-4 at Wrigley Field were the most expensive tickets sold for a World Series game and even topped all but the last two Super Bowls in the 14 years StubHub has tracked the numbers.

The average sale price for Game 3 was $2,603 and $2,327 for Game 4, according to ticket-tracking and sales site TicketIQ.
