Fireworks fall flat as NYE website crashes

The ticket website for London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display crashed within minutes of going live.

With thousands hoping to snap up tickets for £10 for the event, the website seemingly buckled under the pressure, with visitors only able to access an error message on desktop and mobile devices for more than an hour on Friday.

The December 31 celebrations on the banks of the River Thames have become increasingly popular in recent years, with tens of thousands of people watching the fireworks against the backdrop of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

However, ticketing was only introduced for the event in 2014 by Boris Johnson, the former Mayor of London. A number of official organisations, including the city’s Metropolitan Police, said that ticketing was a wise approach to ensure a secure event.

“There was an issue with the site for a short period of time,” a City Hall spokesperson told the London Evening Standard newspaper. “But it's back up and running now. We're looking into what caused the crash.”
