IT worker arrested for Shanghai Disneyland counterfeits

A programmer who works for a company that provides technical assistance to Shanghai Disneyland’s online ticket-selling system has been arrested over accusations that he counterfeited more than 1,700 electronic tickets to the theme park.

According to Chinese news website People’s Daily Online, the man, known only as Bai, managed to get access to the system’s backstage data, including the resort’s sold electronic tickets.

Bai is alleged to have changed the dates of the tickets and then resold them to scalpers for profit. Police said that Bai illegally acquired over 1,700 electronic tickets to the resort from June to July and earned nearly $73,500 after selling them to scalpers.

Resort officials realised that there was a problem when many visitors arriving at the resort found their electronic tickets, all of which had been purchased at alitrip.com, had already been used. Through the IP addresses of the computers logging into the website, the police later tracked and arrested Bai at the IT company.

Shanghai Disneyland said it has now upgraded its online ticket selling system and promised to cover the cost of those visitors whose electronic tickets were duplicated.
