JK Rowling urges Harry Potter fans to avoid touts

JK Rowling has urged Harry Potter fans not to buy tickets for the ‘Cursed Child’ show in London’s West End from touts and insisted that operators of the franchise are committed to reasonable entry prices.

Rowling spoke out after the London Evening Standard reported that fans had been left angry by tickets for shows being snapped up and posted on resale websites at inflated prices.

The latest batch of 60,000 tickets for the award-winning production was released today (Wednesday), with the production scheduled to run from December until February 2018.

Rowling, as well as primary ticketing sources Nimax and ATG, were contacted by disgruntled fans on Twitter.

“Reselling tickets is not against the law,” Rowling said. “We can only cancel resold tickets and ask that people do not support touts.

“A reminder: we are committed to fair pricing for Cursed Child tickets. Do NOT buy from touts, as resold tickets are regularly cancelled. Cancelled tout tickets are reissued at the usual price, so it’s worth checking the website regularly.”

A spokeswoman for the production told the newspaper that “significant progress” was being made with policing those reselling tickets and urged the UK government to “enforce current legislation” on ticket touts.

The spokeswoman added: “As producers there is only so much we can do without the Government enforcing the current legislation along with bringing in stronger measures to target touts on the secondary market specifically.

“We are adding our voice to the significant pressure from the entertainment industry to raise awareness of this issue and make this a key priority.

“With many people trying to purchase tickets, the ticketing systems are very busy. Customers having difficulties booking due to any technical issues are being contacted directly by our ticketing partners to help them complete their bookings.”
