Napoli fans celebrate price u-turn

Fans of Napoli are claiming victory over the Italian Serie A club’s owners after their u-turn over a ticket price hike.

Entry charges were raised by more than 50% from €25 (£22/$28) to €40 ahead of the 2016-17 season.

Supporters of the Uefa Champions League team, which beat Benfica 4-2 on Wednesday, have protested the decision with marches around the city and at the stadium over the last few months. Chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis is reported to have asked broadcasters to not show the protestors’ banners during Napoli’s home games.

The club seems to have acted after a fans boycott of the home game against Chievo, when just 19,900 attended the San Paolo stadium. Napoli’s average attendance last season was around 39,000.

Officials have now said that tickets for the famous ‘Curva’ end for the next home game against AS Roma will return to €25. Central tickets have been reduced from €90 to €65, while €60 side tickets will now cost €45.
