Self-checkout kiosk market to thrive

The self-checkout kiosk market could be worth up to $18bn (£13.8bn/€16.1bn) globally by 2023 according to a new report.

Global Market Insights said surging integration of near field communication (NFC) technology in the machines will be one of the major reasons for a compound annual growth rate of 16%.

According to the survey, the entertainment sector accumulated around 26% of the global self-checkout kiosk industry share in 2015. Venues such as sports arenas, movie theatres and museums are among those that use self-checkout kiosks, with the machines used to print tickets for direct sales and online purchases.

A spokesperson for GMI said: “Print-only kiosks help customers by allowing them to buy tickets online, and in cutting labour costs. Various movie theatres are coming up with systems that help in providing customer service at concession stands.”

GMI said the US is likely to remain the largest region for the sector, but predicted that Asia Pacific will witness significant growth.
