Tokyo 2020 in bid to combat ticket touts

Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will introduce a system that will seek to make it difficult for scalpers to purchase tickets in bulk, according to Japanese newspaper the Asahi Shimbun.

Under the plans, a resale button will be added to the Games’ official websites to give fans that are unable to attend an event the chance to redistribute their tickets at fixed prices.

The report adds that Games organisers will strive to make it easier for fans wishing to buy or sell tickets to communicate with each other.

Committee officials hope the scheme will not only force out ticket scalpers, but also lead to full venues.

“The resale of tickets at high prices is an important problem,” a Tokyo 2020 official said, according to the Asahi Shimbun. “The International Olympic Committee is also asking us to take measures against it. While exchanging opinions with the people of music industry, we will take appropriate measures.”

Resale systems were also in operation during the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Games.
