Top Bundesliga club gives away tickets to unemployed

German Bundesliga football club SV Darmstadt 98 is giving away free season tickets to unemployed fans, and others unable to afford to attend games.

The club is offering standard season tickets for €288 ($318) ahead of 2016-17, its second campaign in the German top-flight following promotion in 2014-15.

While Darmstadt regularly sold out its 17,000-capacity Stadion Böllenfalltor home ground last season, the club is offering season tickets to unemployed, elderly or young fans who would not otherwise be able to afford to pay for their seats

Markus Pfitzner, vice-president of Darmstadt, said the club’s long-term commitment to fans on lower incomes was not affected by its recent successes.

Pfitzner said: “It’s important for us to enable people with lower income to visit our games. Therefore we’re happy to offer this opportunity for the upcoming Bundesliga season.”
