Hickey among nine formally charged by Rio authorities

Pat Hickey and Kevin Mallon have officially been charged by Brazilian prosecutors over their part in the Olympic ticket touting scandal.

Hickey, the former head of the Olympic Committee of Ireland (OCI), and Mallon, the executive at THG Sports, the ticket and hospitality operator, are among nine people facing charges of ticket touting, forming a criminal cartel, illicit marketing, embezzlement, tax evasion, and money laundering.

Marcus Evans, the founder of THG and owner and chairman of English Championship football club Ipswich Town, is also among those to have been charged.

A statement from state prosecutors did not specify which individuals will face which charges relating to the illegal sale of tickets allocated to the OCI.

According to the Irish Times newspaper, Hickey was quizzed by detectives as part of a new line of enquiry on Tuesday. During the interview he refused to answer any of the questions put to him, according to detectives.

It is believed the new line of enquiry could lead to further charges.

“He stayed silent,” detective Aloysio Falcão told the newspaper. “Until now there have been two people arrested and eight others indicted. They are already being charged by the public prosecutors as well. The 10 are the directors of THG, Patrick Hickey, and the directors of Pro 10. The 10 people charged come from these three institutions.”
