More esports events set for AEG arenas

London’s The O2 and the Staples Center in Los Angeles could soon be hosting more esports events following a new agreement between operator Anshutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and the Electronic Sports League (ESL).

The Staples Center hosted the League of Legends World Finals as long ago as 2013, with all tickets sold within an hour. The O2, the world’s busiest indoor venue having attracted almost 900,000 spectators to events during the first half of 2016, has hosted esports events at its 2,750-capacity Indigo at the O2 venue.

In a statement, the pair stated that ESL will now have easier access to “AEG’s global network of more than 120 clubs, theatres, arenas and stadiums for qualifying events, tournaments, and world championships,” and that AEG will be helping out with matters such as event promotion, sponsorships and ticketing.

Other AEG arenas include the MercedesBenz Arena in Shanghai, New York’s Barclays Center and the Maracana Stadium in Rio De Janeiro.

Bob Newman, president of AEG Facilities, said: “Both organisations are committed to creating the best live events for fans around the world and together we will create new events that will unite the community and celebrate players, teams and leagues.”
