Chicago Cubs says demand has led to 20 per cent ticket price spike

World Series winners the Chicago Cubs have raised the price of their season tickets by almost 20 per cent ahead of the 2017 season.

The average price of season tickets will rise by 19.5 per cent in 2017, with increases ranging from six per cent to 31 per cent for infield club box seats.

The Cubs said the rise was in response to a surge in demand after the team secured its first title in 108 years by beating Cleveland Indians in the championship match last month.

The team’s success during 2016 led to a sharp increase in attendances, with 313,000 more fans attending Wrigley Field games than during the previous year. Regular-season tickets were resold on StubHub.com for an average of 96 per cent above their face value, with post-season tickets at 670 per cent above face value.

“Trying to capture that demand and continue the progress on the field, and (with) our mission to field a consistently competitive team, no surprise, we’ll be increasing season ticket prices,” Colin Faulkner, senior vice president of sales and marketing, told the Chicago Tribune newspaper. “Even with the 191/2 percent increase, it leaves a significant value for our season ticket holders.

“Certainly we’ll have a ticket price that may be relatively higher than some teams. But we really think that we’re providing tremendous access and value to our season ticket holders.”
