Rangers fans left ticketless due to airline luggage bungle

Fans of Scottish Premiership club Rangers were left ticketless for a game in Germany over the weekend after their luggage went missing.

Rangers played Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on Sunday in a friendly at the end of the winter break in Scotland and Germany.

The Daily Record newspaper reported that around 40 Gers flew from Glasgow Airport to Berlin via Amsterdam with KLM at 6am on Saturday morning. However, when they arrived in Germany, they discovered their luggage – many containing match tickets – had been been left behind.

While the suitcases were due to be flown from Amsterdam to Berlin on Saturday night, many fans had already had to leave for Leipzig, which is 118 miles from the airport.

One fan told the Daily Record that airline staff said luggage had to be stored in hold as there was insufficient room in overhead lockers. He added that many had chosen to simply buy tickets from touts rather than make the long trip again between Leipzig and Berlin.

“There’s no chance we could get back to Berlin, it’s hundreds of euros in a taxi for a round-trip. It’s one hour on the train and two-and-a-half hours to drive,” said the fan. “Even the train cost us 50 euros.

“We have just managed to buy more tickets, we got them from boys we met at the hotel.”

A KLM spokesman said a fault at the luggage department at Schiphol airport was to blame.
