Ticketone has been fined €1m by the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) after an investigation by Italy’s competition authority into the secondary ticketing market.
AGCM also handed out fines totalling €700,000 to three other resale platforms – Seatwave, Viagogo Ticketbis and Mywayticket.
The regulator said that Ticketone had not taken sufficient precautions to prevent automated systems such as ‘bots’ from taking advantage of the system. Moreover, the company had failed to put in place sufficient limits on the number of tickets that could be acquired through a single transaction.
The other three providers were accused of failing to provide adequate information for customers and, in some cases, failing to make clear their role as an intermediary in the ticket-buying process.
The watchdog said that it launched its investigation in October on the back of claims that tickets were disappearing from primary ticketing platforms and appearing almost simultaneously on secondary platforms at higher prices.
