SPI Cinemas reaps benefits of digital transformation

Indian cinema giant SPI Cinemas has seen a 30 per cent surge in traffic after switching the focus of its digital platforms from pure ticketing to a more comprehensive movie-going experience.

SPI Cinemas – also known as Sathyam Cinemas – is now handling more than one million page views per day across its channels after partnering with ThoughtWorks to build a responsive, scalable system.

According to the CIOL website, global technology consultancy ThoughtWorks mapped the movie-going habits of millennials to build a picture of their digital needs and compared that to SPI’s existing IT infrastructure.

Thanks to the use of lean principles and open source tools, SPI was able to launch its branded website and mobile apps in just 10 weeks.

“We designed the architecture to facilitate rapid scale. We used lean methodologies to deliver a highly responsive system,” said Govindarajan S, general manager of ThoughtWorks.

SPI said it has achieved a 30 per cent increase in daily traffic, with more than 50,000 people having downloaded and installed their iOS app in just two months. It said it has also reduced its falling booking count from 10 per cent to just 1 per cent.
