Ticket prices for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been agreed at 2,020 yen ($18/€15.40/£14) to represent the year of the event.
The organising committee decided the low-cost tickets, for preliminary-round events as well as for the opening and closing ceremonies, will be available for groups including children, senior citizens and people with disabilities, with the criteria for purchase to be decided at a later date.
Paralympic tickets will be even cheaper as the organisers look to make the Games as affordable as possible.
At the 2012 London Olympics, £20.12 admission tickets were offered to mark the year.
“We hope that a diverse audience enjoy the Olympics and fans generate a frenzied atmosphere in the stadium,” said Sadahiko Kano, who heads the Tokyo 2020 ticketing strategy panel, according to Kyodo News
The Games organisers will announce the basic outline of ticket prices on July 20, two days after gaining approval at the International Olympic Committee board of directors meeting.
Last month, it was reported that the organising committee plans to set a price cap on tickets at 300,000yen ($2,720).
In addition, a panel of experts discussed a cheaper ticket for elementary school students, children, and families in the range of 1,000-2,020 yen, and looked at significantly raising prices for those in wealthier groups.
Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2019.
