Tokyo 2020 unveils Paralympic ticketing strategy

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) has set a ceiling of JPY 7,000 (£49/€55/$63) as the maximum price of tickets for sports events at the Paralympic Games.

Tokyo 2020 today (Friday) detailed an outline of proposed ticket prices for the Paralympic Games, with a commitment to enhance the family atmosphere at the Games and attract as many youngsters as possible.

JPY900 has been set as the lowest price for tickets to sports events in goalball, rowing, taekwondo and wheelchair fencing. The highest-priced JPY 7,000 tickets have been assigned to swimming and wheelchair basketball events. Tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies will cost from JPY 8,000 up to JPY 150,000.

Tokyo 2020 said a special range of lower-priced tickets is being considered for families and groups whose members include children, senior citizens or individuals with impairments. Similar tickets are also being considered as part of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games ticketing programme targeting one million students across Japan.

In addition, concessionary tickets for areas dedicated to wheelchair users will be made available, and Tokyo 2020 is also planning to offer a hospitality programme. All prices are applicable only to tickets purchased in Japan.

Andrew Parsons, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president, said: “One of the stand-out features from previous Paralympics has been seeing whole generations of the same family watching one of the world’s biggest sporting events together in one venue. I am confident Tokyo 2020 will be no different and those who buy tickets will create a fantastic atmosphere for all the Para athletes taking part.”

Tokyo 2020 today said the number of Japanese residents who have registered at Tokyo 2020’s online ticketing platform has reached 500,000 following the launch of a ticket campaign on July 20.

The English-language registration website will open after spring 2019, while additional details of the ticket ordering and purchasing process for residents of Japan will be announced in due course.

Applications for Paralympic Games tickets will be accepted from the summer of 2019. Full details of ticket prices will be announced next spring or later.
