Super Bowl sales top of StubHub’s US sports events

The NFL’s Super Bowl championship, which took place in February at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, has shot to the top of StubHub’s list of top-selling US sporting events of 2018.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over former champions the New England Patriots saw ticket sales from all 50 states and 24 different countries. The attendance for Super Bowl LII was 67,612.

Perkins Miller, general manager for the Americas at StubHub, told the Reuters news agency: “We had more than 200,000 folks go across borders to attend 30,000 events in 2018,” Miller said. “It makes the world feel a little smaller and more connected.”

In second place for ticket sales was the College Football Championship, which saw the Alabama Crimson Tide win in overtime against the Georgia Bulldogs in January.

Major League Baseball’s World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers rounded out the top five in ticket sales with its final three games being heavily attended. Game’s three to five reached over the 53,000 mark at Dodger Stadium.

Tiger Woods’ return to the Masters helped to outsell last year’s record-setting event by seven per cent, making it the best-selling Masters tournament ever.

LeBron James’ move to the Los Angeles Lakers helped to drive sales for the NBA basketball franchise, with a 16 per cent growth in ticket sales for the season.
