MLS integrates ticketing for revamped app

North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) has enhanced its official app ahead of the 2019 season, adding new ticketing options to the services on offer.

The new MLS season commences at the weekend and the League has chosen to build on an app that debuted in May marking the first time it had taken app development in-house.

MLS senior vice-president for media, Chris Schlosser, told the SportsBusiness Daily website that the League has used the last nine months to build out the features of what it hopes is the “home for an MLS fan.”

For the 2019 season, the app will now provide digital ticketing management for clubs that partner with SeatGeek and Ticketmaster, allowing fans to purchase seats directly from the app. The app will also now offer direct access to the MLS store with fans able to buy items through the app, while deeper fantasy game integration will also be provided.

The launch of the revamped app will be supported by a new marketing campaign entitled ‘Live Your Colors’. The campaign will feature during nationally and locally broadcast matches, as well as across league and club media channels.

Schlosser added that engagement with the app rose by a third year-on-year, adding that roughly 70% of total digital consumption for MLS comes via mobile devices.

MLS heads into its 2019 season having set records for ticket revenue and attendance in 2018. Major League Soccer’s ticket revenue per game rose by 10 per cent last year to its highest level in the League’s 23-season history. Total attendance across MLS increased from 8.72 million in 2017 to 9.05 million.
