Theatre ticket funding campaign for young women surpasses target

A crowdfunding campaign to provide theatre tickets for young women to see the West End production of Emilia has surpassed its target of £1,500 (€1,760/$1,972).

The fund, which was set up by theatre videographer Ben Hewis, has reached £1,740 as of today (Thursday), meaning more than 65 young women will have a chance to see the show.

Hewis said in his campaign description that he was inspired to set it up after seeing the production.

He said, according to the Stage: “After seeing Emilia in the West End a couple of weeks ago I came out determined to help more young women see it. So I set up a crowdfunder asking people to donate money towards buying tickets for young women to see the show.

“I thought I might get enough to send a handful if I was lucky. But it really flew on Twitter and to date we’ve raised £1,600, enough to send more than 60 young women.”

Hewis said he has been in touch with several organisations to “ensure the tickets go to those who will benefit the most”.

He added: “In a world that seems less than kind most of the time it has been truly heartening to witness so many acts of kindness.”
