Amazon to offer cinema ticketing in India via BookMyShow deal

Amazon has teamed up with entertainment giant BookMyShow to introduce cinema ticketing to its Indian shopping site and app.

Through the five-year partnership, users across India can book through the ‘movie tickets’ category under the ‘shop by category’ tab on the shopping site or through Amazon Pay.

Amazon said its credit card users in India will get a two-per-cent cashback on each movie ticket purchase, and will also offer a cashback of up to Rs200 (£2.19/€2.53/$2.83) on each ticket purchase until November 14.

Ashish Hemrajani, founder and chief executive of BookMyShow, said the partnership will enable the company to access Amazon India’s “deep penetration across tier 2 and tier 3 cities.”

BookMyShow, which employs 1,400 employees, sells about 15 million tickets each month.

The firm’s competitor, Paytm, made its way into the movie ticketing sector three years ago and has since gained a large portion of BookMyShow’s market share by offering cashback on each ticket purchase. The partnership with Amazon will help to mute Paytm’s competitive advantage through its new cashback initiative.

Mahendra Nerurkar, director of Amazon Pay, said the partnership shows Amazon’s commitment to “simplify the lives of our customers in every possible way — as they shop, pay bills, or seek other services.”
