Sunderland chief pledges 100 tickets for charity

Kind-hearted Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has pledged 100 match tickets to the club’s Gift of Football initiative.

The English third-tier League One club’s campaign has returned for Christmas 2019 after more than 1,650 tickets were gifted by fans last year.

This year’s initiative began on Friday with fans pledging tickets for the Boxing Day fixture against Bolton Wanderers. Gift of Football tickets are priced at £15 and can be donated directly via the club’s website.

Donald has doubled his contribution compared to 2018 by donating 100 tickets to the city-wide cause.

Donald said: “I was overwhelmed by the incredible generosity displayed by the Sunderland family in 2018, so I’m once again proud to be supporting such a spirited cause.

“For many people within our community, Christmas can be a challenging time, so as a football club, it’s vital that we understand the important role that we can play in supporting those who support us.

“Over the next month, SAFC will be backing various charities in order to tackle the real issues facing our city, and I look forward to seeing our supporters once again demonstrate why they are the best in the land.

“From donating tickets to helping us raise awareness, everybody has a part to play no matter how small, because together, we can make a real difference to many this Christmas.”

Insurance tycoon Donald completed his takeover of Sunderland in July 2018, completing a deal with former owner Ellis Short.
