Chinese box office surpasses 2018’s record

China’s box office has broken last year’s record of RMB60.7bn ($8.67bn/£6.63bn/€7.8bn), according to data from Maoyan Entertainment.

The 2018 record was surpassed on December 13, with domestic movies becoming a key driver for growth at the Chinese box office.

Ne Zha, an animation fantasy adventure film released in July, brought in nearly RMB5bn as the most successful movie for the year.

Domestic movies in the summer reached RMB 17.64bn, up two per cent from last year’s box office.

In October, the total Chinese box office hit RMB8.167bn, surging 119 per cent over the same month last year.

Among the top 10 movies so far this year, eight were Chinese films, with a combined box office of RMB22.6bn, and only two were imported, including Avengers: Endgame and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
