Disney dominates 2019 box office

Disney has dominated US cinema ticket purchases in 2019 with almost 40% of all domestic movie-goers watching films produced by the studio.

Disney brought in around $13bn in worldwide box office sales in 2019, including a record number of $1bn-plus releases.

The top five films of 2019 in terms of ticket sales were all Disney movies, including Avengers: Endgame, which was the highest-grossing release ever at $2.8bn, as well as The Lion King, Captain Marvel, Aladdin and Toy Story 4.

“There’s plenty of capacity to bring people to the movie screen,” Cathleen Taff, distribution chief for Disney, told the Associated Press news agency. “What I think we’re doing is competing for their time. If it’s not great, they do have other options. But when it is great, people show up. And we’ve seen that this year with seven $1bn movies.”

However, overall ticket sales in the US and Canada were down 4.4% year-on-year through to December 29, according to data firm Comscore.
