Germany’s KFC Uerdingen sells virtual tickets amid football blackout

German third-tier football club KFC Uerdingen is selling virtual home tickets to generate income amid the Covid-19 events shutdown.

The 3.Liga club is looking to sell out the 34,500 ‘seats’ at its home ground of Krefeld Grotenburg, which is currently being rebuilt so Uerdingen has been playing home matches elsewhere this season.

Fans can purchase a €5 virtual souvenir ticket, which they can print-at-home, in the general stands or a €19.50 VIP ticket for the fictional match on May 26.

The ticket, which has been specially designed, features themes from the Grotenburg Stadium and the name of the buyer as well as their seat number and even the virtual kick-off time.

Uerdingen said in a statement: “With the ticket, you buy a piece of solidarity with the club. You show who your heart beats for even in difficult times.”

The club played in the Bundesliga during the 1980s, finishing third in 1986, but has fallen as low as the sixth division in recent years.

Earlier this week, the German Football League (DFL) laid out plans for the 2019-20 Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga seasons to be completed behind closed doors, with a goal of completing the campaign by the end of June.

The DFL on Tuesday ratified last week’s recommendation to further suspend play until at least April 30 amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier this month, play was suspended until April 2. The announcement came just hours after the DFL said the weekend’s games would take place behind closed doors where possible, before a full suspension from March 17.

The DFL had earlier unanimously agreed that it wanted to complete the current season by June 30, including without spectators if absolutely necessary. The goal is for matches to take place with a minimal workforce inside the stadia.
