Amazon Music integrates Twitch’s live streams

Live streamed concerts on Twitch will now be integrated into the Amazon Music app to allow fans and artists to connect amid the continued lack of in-person events due to COVID-19.

Twitch, which is the leading live streaming platform, primarily for gamers, has seen a significant rise in user numbers as musicians tune in to perform to their fans and monetise their concerts.

Through the Amazon Music partnership, fans will be able to interact with artists who are planning on live streaming to Twitch in the coming days. The streams will vary from live music to other music-related content, like artist interviews or variety shows.

Upcoming events include a Q&A with The Killers’ Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. about their latest album, Imploding the Mirage, and Capital One City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage Anywhere will stream exclusive digital performances spanning Latin, world, hip hop, jazz and more for its weekly concert series.

After artists link their Twitch profiles to Amazon Music, a musician’s stream will appear on their artist page inside the Amazon Music app while they are live, and a notification will be sent out to followers when they start streaming.

According to a report by StreamElements, Twitch grew 56 per cent in hours watched in Q2 2020 compared with Q1, passing the five billion mark, due to the increase in online entertainment.

By July, the ‘Music & Performing Arts’ category on Twitch had grown 387 per cent year-over-year to 17.6 million hours watched.

The platform supports different tiers of subscriptions and donations allowing indie artists to continue making money during the pandemic.

Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, has also announced today (Thursday) it is rolling out its online film Watch Parties feature with the Amazon Prime Video library.
