Cinema ticket sales and streams smash records for BookMyShow

Entertainment company BookMyShow has celebrated a number of achievements including 29 million cinema tickets sold across its platform in April alone.

The Mumbai-headquartered company has also highlighted its foray into entertainment content with BookMyShow Stream, with 52,000 streams purchased by cinephiles and entertainment lovers last month.

Ticket sales and streaming stats showcase a hunger for movies and entertainment in India, following the return to cinemas after an ease in pandemic restrictions.

Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, cinemas, BookMyShow, said: “BookMyShow has achieved a remarkable milestone across both its key content pillars – cinema vertical and the TVOD platform BookMyShow Stream – in April 2022, setting the tone for the Indian movie entertainment industry, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers by a landslide and growing it further as the market leader.”

Saksena said that Transaction Video on Demand (TVOD) had become one of the most “exciting spaces” for content makers and studios as the “pay for what you want to watch” attitude is gaining traction, as more turn away from having multiple subscriptions to different services.

BookMyShow Stream was launched in 2021 with 52,000 streams in April showcasing its growth. April’s 29 million cinema ticket sales also smashed March 2022’s previous record of 26 million.

“Consumption of entertainment has also never been stronger with BookMyShow shattering all records, crossing a massive 29 million tickets sold for the month let by cinemas, reinforcing India’s love for movies across formats, yet again,” said Saksena.

“There is no let-up to entertainment consumption demand spiralling with BookMyShow continuing the pre-covid bull-run having crossed 18 million tickets sold as of May 25th before the completion of the whole month.”
