Trainline aids women’s professional football attendances with discount

Independent rail and coach travel platform Trainline has announced a discount for those making their way to any professional women’s football match in England this season, in a bid to boost attendances.

Following England’s victory in the UEFA Women’s Euro this summer, there has been a huge boom in interest to watch women’s football.

The £10 ($12/€12) discount on train tickets used to travel to women’s professional football matches is available to use now when booking until August 31, or until 10,000 discounts have been claimed. The aim is to boost attendances at women’s football matches.

Trainline has introduced the offer after research revealed that over two thirds (68%) of those polled travelled by train to the Women’s Euro, while a further 43% said they would attend further sporting matches if they could save on travel.

A third of those surveyed said that England winning the Women’s Euro has been one of the most inspirational moments in women’s sport in the last five years. Some four in 10 (44%) agreed that the Lionesses’ win broke boundaries while 37% think the side was inspirational due to the records broken.

The win over Germany in the final at Wembley also encouraged 70% of women to play football according to the survey from Trainline, with young children also inspired to take up the sport.

Beth Mead, England forward and winner of Euro 2022, said: “It was an incredible experience with England to receive the nation’s support on our route to winning Euro 2022. It gave the squad a massive boost to play in front of a record crowd of over 87,000 fans at Wembley Stadium and knowing that millions more were watching from home. It was a thrilling moment to be a part of.

“As we head into the new season, I’m so pleased to partner with Trainline to offer supporters discounted travel so that we can reward fans who want to show their love for the game. I want to see women’s football grow from strength to strength and I believe this initiative will help to introduce the sport to a new audience, as well as inspire the next generation of girls to pick up a football. There really is nothing like it.”

Milena Nikolic, chief technology officer at Trainline, added: “The Lionesses’ win at the Euros is a moment England fans will never forget and we want to do all we can to keep the momentum going.

“Trains are not only a more sustainable way to travel, but also a convenient way to get to the stadiums and we are so proud to be able to do our part to both help our customers and support the growth of the game. In addition to the promotion, customers can save further on their train tickets by booking in advance and using a digital Railcard, available to buy from Trainline.”
