Brixton O2 Academy set to remain closed for further three months

The Brixton O2 Academy is set to remain closed until April after two people died following a crowd crush at an Asake gig in December. 

Gaby Hutchinson and Rebecca Ikumelo died after being injured in a crush during a concert from the Afrobeats artist.

Metropolitan Police launched an investigation to work out what happened at the gig, where it had been reported that a large number of people had tried to enter the venue without tickets.

Academy Music Group, which runs the venue, said it would stay closed while the police continued its investigation. The venue’s licence had originally been suspended by Lambeth Council until today (January 16).

Now, following the meeting of the local authority’s licensing sub-committee earlier today (Monday), the venue has had its licence officially suspended for another three months.

As per the BBC, a spokesperson said: “O2 Academy Brixton recognises the gravity of the events which occurred on the night of 15th December 2022 and expresses its sincere condolences to the families of those who died during the tragic incident and its genuine concerns for anyone affected by it.

“The licence holder (AMG) is committed to understanding what happened and co-operating with the various investigations that are under way including providing full cooperation to the police in the conduct of their inquiries.”
