India vs Pakistan welcomes record-breaking 34,000 fans in New York

India vs Pakistan in the men’s T20 World Cup welcomed more than 34,000 fans in New York, a record attendance for an international cricket match in the US.

The competition is currently being played in the US and the West Indies. It is the first time the International Cricket Council (ICC) has held a major tournament on US soil.

Yesterday’s (Sunday’s) match, which was ultimately won by India, was played at a groundbreaking temporary venue in the form of Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Plans for the stadium were drawn up by architecture and design firm Populous, and it is believed to be the first of its kind for international cricket. The stadium grandstands were originally used during Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix last year, incorporating a sustainability element to the venue’s construction.

The match was also one of the most in-demand games in T20 history, with over two million applications for the ticket lottery, according to the competition’s ticketing partner Secutix.

Tickets were mobile-only, and those sold both on the primary and secondary markets were delivered through the official T20 World Cup ticket wallet, powered by Secutix’s digital ticketing solution.

Additionally, Secutix’s SaaS-based ticketing and engagement platform managed all hospitality sales for the six different package offerings at the venue, while it also delivered all on-site parking operations.

“It was an electric atmosphere with a sell-out, passionate crowd. Operations on the day ran smoothly, with very few people needing support from the ticket office,” said Michael McDermott, Secutix’s general manager of the Americas.

“We were able to communicate with all ticket holders by sending over 100,000 push notifications to customers encouraging them to get ready for the match and tips for swift entry, as well as letting them know when gates were open and which gates were quieter than others.

“The few issues we saw at the ticket office were from people with fake physical tickets. But knowing that all tickets were delivered by us made it easy to identify problems and direct customers back to their point of purchase for resolution.”

Rain initially delayed the start of the game, but this did not dishearten the 34,038 fans in attendance. After getting underway, rain again halted play for almost 40 minutes.

India were bowled out by Pakistan for 119 in 19 overs, while Pakistan posted 113-7 in response.

Pakistan’s loss against India follows the side’s defeat at the hands of the USA on Thursday, after a thrilling Super Over.

The country will face Canada tomorrow, again at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, while India is due to play the USA on Wednesday at the same venue.
