The English football club made the decision to digitise its ticketing system for the 2021-2022 campaign, which meant fans were asked to download their season tickets to their mobile phones.
Supporters would then gain entry to Old Trafford by scanning QR codes. However, recent communication from the club has updated fans of a change to live QR codes that restricts the season ticket to a single device.
This means that season ticket holders will be unable to pass on their ticket to someone else without cost if they cannot attend themselves.
A Manchester United membership is instead required to accept a transferred season ticket which comes at a minimum cost of £20 ($25/€23) per season.
Fans have taken to social media to express their anger at the changes, with one brandishing it as “unacceptable”, while others are said to have written to the club to criticise the new rules.
“The harder they make it to pass a ticket on, the more fans that will pack their season tickets in,” one wrote online.
The system was implemented as a trial for some fans for the home match against Sheffield United on April 24.
It is the latest decision in recent months that has sparked discontent among the fanbase, following Manchester United’s decision to implement a rule that stated supporters must attend 17 of 19 home Premier League games to keep a season ticket.
