Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival has cancelled its 2024 edition out of respect for the Coronation Ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.
Festival organiser Future Sound Asia made the announcement on its social media channels, explaining that the festival will not take place for the second year in the row, due to the coronation of the 17th king of Malaysia.
The country’s authorities informed Future Sound Asia that large-scale performances featuring international artists could not take place on the date of the coronation, and should be rescheduled for a later date.
However, organisers explained in a statement that because the festival is a multi-day event, this could not be possible.
“As a result, Future Sound Asia is announcing the cancellation of the festival, originally scheduled for July 20 and 21, 2024. All ticket purchasers for GVF will automatically receive full refunds to the payment method used for their purchase,” the statement added.
Due to take place at Resorts World Away in Genting Highlands, the line-up featured acts such as J Balvin and Peggy Gou.
Last year’s festival was cancelled during the first day, after The 1975 frontman Matty Healy denounced the country’s LGBTQ+ laws.
Healy followed his speech by kissing bass player Ross MacDonald on stage, before being banned from performing in Malaysia.
