Mixed martial arts promoter Oktagon MMA has sold 55,000 tickets for its upcoming Oktagon 62 event in Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park on October 12.
The company has set its sights on eclipsing the record attendance of its rival UFC which stands at 57,127.
The figure was set at UFC 243 on October 2019 at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.
“It is absolutely unbelievable, we feel so grateful for the fans and the position they have afforded us in Germany,” said Oktagon MMA co-owner Pavol Neruda.
“It is really not easy to sell even 20,000. We are selling that amount regularly in Czechia, Germany and Slovakia. It might look easy, because we are so lucky to have people here, but in the end it is a lot of effort that needs to be put in to make it happen.
“When we announced the Eintracht Frankfurt stadium move, we did not know what to expect. It is a huge stadium, a colosseum and an unbelievably huge venue.
“We were honestly thinking that if we could get more than 40,000 people in there, then anything above would be a success. It is our first stadium show here and it is absolutely massive. We are very close to selling out and putting ourselves in the history books.
“It is absolutely crazy, mind-blowing and still selling really well and tracking towards an even bigger number.”
UFC 243 drew the sixth highest MMA crowd in the sport’s history, some way behind the Pride/K-1 Shockwave event in 2002 that was attended by 91,107 people at the former National Stadium in Tokyo.
However, the true attendance figure of shockwave is disputed as some sources list the number at around 71,000 spectators.
Germany’s Christian Eckerlin and Christian Jungwirth are set to headline the Oktagon 62 event as they prepare to take each other on.
