Permanent residents abroad will now be able to verify their sports tickets and season passes via the Gov.gr Wallet app in Greece, with the new feature allowing the app to read passports using the embedded NFC chip.
This will provide a streamlined and secure way for fans to enter stadiums.
Greece introduced a state-run digital identification app on their mobile phone to buy tickets in a move aimed at tackling violence. The measure is part of a crackdown on sports-related violence that forced football clubs to close their stadiums for two months, after a police officer was shot with a flare during a fan riot in Athens that ultimately took his life.
Additionally, the authorities banned paper tickets for all league matches, with fans having to use mobile phones with the verification app.
The verification initiative is a collaboration between Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou and Deputy Sports Minister Yannis Vroutsis, and aims to enhance security at sporting venues. Permanent residents abroad with foreign passports will now be able to access stadiums using their e-tickets through the Gov.gr Wallet app.
Sports fans will need to purchase tickets through the authorised providers, before opening the app and selecting ‘event tickets’ in guest mode. This will bypass user authentication and taxisnet passwords.
Users will then be asked to scan the passport via its NFC chip, which links the passport details to the ticket. Finally, users must enter the reservation code found on the ticket.
Once at the stadium, fans can easily scan their devices to gain entry.
