The Red Hot Chili Peppers have concluded their two-year global stadium tour with 3.4 million tickets sold over 86 shows in what was the band’s highest-grossing tour to date.

The tour drew in more than $300m (£235m/€274m) in revenue according to Billboard, and finished as the third biggest-selling tour this decade, only behind Coldplay and Elton John.

The tour supported the Unlimited Love album, which was released in April 2022, and Return of the Dream Canteen which followed in October of the same year.

It began on June 4, 2022 with a performance at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville. The opener launched a 12-show leg in Europe that sold 659,000 tickets.

The band headed to North America next with 19 shows in the US and Canada that sold 807,000 tickets.

The tour was the band’s first full tour in top-capacity venues and resulted in around three and a half times as many tickets sold as the previous best – the By the Way World Tour in 2002-03 that sold 979,000 tickets.

Although not officially a part of the recent tour, the group performed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony yesterday.

The band played during the handover section that looks ahead to the next edition of the Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers originated in the Californian city and the event in Paris also saw artists Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg perform.

R&B singer H.E.R. was also present to perform the US national anthem.

“This is the biggest moment in LA28 history to date, as the Olympic flag passes from Paris to LA,” said Los Angeles 2028 chair Casey Wasserman.

“We are thrilled to feature the very best of LA with local artists and are grateful to Billie, H.E.R., the Chili Peppers and Snoop for their collaboration on what will be an incredible show to a global audience that will give fans a taste of what’s to come in 2028.”
