Japan is set to welcome a new rock festival that will feature the likes of Pulp, Weezer, Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream and more.
British act Pulp and US group Weezer (pictured) were announced as headliners today (Thursday).
Rockin’ On Sonic festival will take place at the Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall in Chiba, some 40 kilometres east of the centre of Tokyo.
Festival organisers are set to announce further acts in due course, with the two-day event scheduled to take place on January 4 and 5. Pre-sale tickets will be available from August 20.
When launching the festival, Rockin’ On Sonic producer Yoichiro Yamazaki explained that the festival will take place across two stages; the Galaxy Stage with a 20,000 capacity and the 8,000-capacity Cosmo Stage.
Rockin’ On Japan will work with Creative Man, which is behind the annual music festival ‘Summer Sonic’, to produce the event.
“One thing I was worried about was whether overseas artists would come to Japan during the New Year, but overseas management and artists welcomed this event,” said Yamazaki.
“It fits perfectly with their needs for not only an annual summer festival, but also to come to Japan more and perform in front of a Japanese audience. They are very excited.”
