Zomato is set to introduce a secondary market for event ticketing on its platform, continuing the expansion of its going-out business.

The news follows the acquisition of Paytm’s entertainment ticketing segment by the Indian food delivery giant.

Zomato’s secondary offering will be called ‘Book Now, Sell Anytime’, enabling users that can no longer attend events to sell their tickets on the app. The feature is set to launch on September 30, with bookings already open for Zomato’s Feeding India Concert, which is being headlined by British artist Dua Lipa.

In a blog post, Zomato Live Entertainment’s chief executive Zeenah Vilcassim said: “We understand – plans change! There are a lot of unknowns when booking a ticket so far in advance: What if I’m out of the country? What if my friends can’t go? What if I forgot about that wedding I had to attend? We want to make it as easy as possible to book a ticket to an event, as early as possible, without having to worry about anything else. This is precisely why we built our own ‘Book Now, Sell Anytime’ feature – a first of its kind by an Indian ticketing platform.”

After a customer purchases a listed ticket, the seller’s ticket is cancelled and a fresh ticket is issued to the new owner. The seller will receive the full value of their listed price.

To deter touting, Zomato has said a customer can only buy up to 10 tickets per category which can be listed for resale, each event will be capped at a certain value and that the company will constantly monitor the platform.

“Our hope is that this feature is utilised for the right reasons by our genuine customers. We also want to ensure this does not promote ill practices in the events industry such as black market touting or unfair pricing,” added Vilcassim.
