Queensland has appointed its first night-life economy commissioner, with the state government also pledging A$1.6m (£800,000/€1m/$1.1m) to help support live music.
John Collins has taken on the role as the state’s first night-life economy commissioner, and will work with live music venues, nightclubs, festival organisers, bars and restaurants, entertainment precincts, arts outlets and local pubs across the state, to build sustainable businesses.
Collins was a member of rock band Powderfinger, which was formed in Brisbane in 1989. The band broke up in 2010.
Brisbane is a night-life hotspot, and other cities and towns across Queensland also support live music, theatre, arts, entertainment, festivals, dining and tourism, meaning the sector generates millions of dollars.
Collins will help facilitate partnerships to encourage growth and sustainability for local businesses that drive the industry, while also promoting and strengthening development opportunities for more established venues and events.
Additionally, the Queensland Government will provide A$1.6m in funding to support venues and enhance the sustainability of their business, as well as providing a stage for local musicians to develop their talents.
The funding will be available through the Growing Gigs Fund and the Live Music Venue Business Grants. Small music venues can apply for Growing Gigs Fund grants of up to A$10,000 to support performance fees for Queensland contemporary music artists, helping them to connect with audiences.
The venues can also access up to $25,000 to invest in business improvement initiatives with the aim of developing stronger businesses for the future.
“John Collins has always been a champion of Queensland’s nightlife. JC is synonymous with success; whether that’s on stage or in business,” commented Queensland Premier Steven Miles.
“He is a great appointment for Queensland and brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and know-how to drive our night-life economy to a different level and help businesses of all sizes to thrive.
“We will continue to work closely to ensure we protect the safe environment my government has worked hard to build and enforce, while also growing opportunities for our business and arts sectors.”
