The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) welcomed 100,013 fans for the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final on Saturday.
The final was contested by Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions, with the Lions ultimately crowned the winner.
Saturday’s attendance figure is slightly down on last year’s 100,024 (capacity), but is still commendable given neither team hailed from Melbourne.
Eight of the last 10 Grand Finals have been played at the MCG. Restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic saw the 2020 final played at the Gabba in Brisbane, with Perth’s Optus Stadium hosting the 2021 decider between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

MCG’s record for the biggest VFL/AFL crowd stands at 121,696, set in 1970 for the Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood.
In July, the AFL announced it would allocate a further 1,000 tickets to competing club members for this year’s Grand Final.
Competing club members received the largest allocation for the match, followed by Melbourne Cricket Club members, AFL and Medallion Club Members, other stakeholders, and hospitality customers in descending order.
Ahead of last weekend’s final, the AFL warned fans to be vigilant when purchasing tickets after thousands of official barcodes were said to be illegally downloaded in a digital security breach.
