The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has racked up its highest total attendance in 22 years – an increase of 48% on last season.
Some 2,353,735 basketball fans attended WNBA games during the 2024 campaign – an average of 9,807 per event compared to 6,615 in 2023.
Additionally, the league’s 154 sellouts marked a 242% increase from last season (45).
The Indiana Fever v Washington Mystics match-up on September 19 at Capital One Arena set a WNBA single-game attendance record of 20,711. It was one of three games to draw at least 20,000 fans this season, along with 20,366 for Indiana v Las Vegas Aces on July 2, and 20,333 for Indiana v Washington on June 7.
The Fever’s total home attendance of 340,715 set a single-season record for a WNBA team, surpassing the previous home attendance record of 250,656 set by New York Liberty in 2001 in 16 games.
All 12 WNBA teams enjoyed at least double-digit year-over-year growth in terms of attendance this season, led by Indiana (+319%), Los Angeles Sparks (+69%) and New York (+64%).
Indiana’s popularity – as well as interest in the WNBA itself – has increased significantly since the arrival of Caitlin Clark.
In June, the WNBA announced it had achieved its highest-attended opening month in 26 years.
The 2024 regular season finished earlier this month, with the playoff semi-finals continuing this week.
