Austin City Limits Music Festival has furthered its commitment to being more sustainable by announcing that its IHG Hotels & Resorts stage will be powered solely by a hybrid battery system in partnership with Reverb’s Music Decarbonisation Project.
Reverb is a non-profit dedicated to inspiring and supporting music fans in tackling environmental and social issues.
All aspects of the stage will be powered by the greener batteries from audio, lighting, video through to stage production. The hybrid-powered stage will deploy over 1 MWh of battery storage capacity, minimising the run time of biodiesel generators providing significant fuel and emissions savings.
Additionally, the shade tents at ACL Eats, the West Entrance of the festival, and a number of backstage areas will be powered by hybrid battery systems.
“Following this year’s highly successful and history-making battery-powered main stage at Lollapalooza, we are excited to bring this sustainable solution to Austin City Limits Music Festival,” said Jake Perry, director of operations and sustainability at Live Nation-owned C3 Presents, the promoter of the event.
“We have set a goal to build a more sustainable future for music festivals, which involves implementing solutions that make our operations more energy efficient and reinventing how we look at power.
“We are grateful to Reverb’s Decarbonisation Project for their partnership in helping us move closer to our goals.”
With a commitment to the preservation of Zilker Park, where the festival is held, a number of initiatives have been implemented at each edition of Austin City Limits: recycling, composting, eco-friendly service items at ACL Eats, and Electrolyte Hydration Stations that offer free, filtered water for refillable bottles.
Biodiesel is utilised in diesel engines across the festival site, and carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles, generators and staff travel are offset through the purchase of certified carbon offsets. The festival is also utilising a material recovery programme that identifies key materials that can be diverted from landfills and shared with partners across the local community.
This year, the festival will work with Food for All Project to donate any unused backstage meals to people in need.
Austin Parks Foundation will also present ACL Fest’s greening programmes for both weekends of the festival. The Foundation and its volunteers will manage Rock & Recycle, Divert It! and Water Refill Stations. Rock & Recycle is co-presented by H-E-B and encourages attendees to pick up a bag of recyclables or TURN reusable cups from the grounds in exchange for a specially designed ACFL Fest line-up tee. Divert It! enlists volunteers to encourage and educate fans by helping them compost, recycle and send less waste to landfills.
Austin City Limits Music Festival is set to take place on October 4-6 and October 11-13 and will feature headline performances from Dua Lipa, Tyler The Creator, Chris Stapleton, Blink-182 and more.
